The Early Years Before you could shop and dine in Mt Pleasant the Sewee Indians were the occupants. The first white settlers came to the area in the summer of 1680 on what was 2,340 acres. Sullivan's Island was also part of the first settlement. In the late 1690 59 settlers were granted portions of land which now bear their names and Hibben's ferry (a boat) in 1770 was the first to connect Haddrell's Point to the mainland of Charleston.
An area of Conflict In 1706 the area withstood attacks from the French and the Spanish and during the beginning of the Revolutionary War the site played a major role in a victory for Cornwallis' troops as the British seized the area and later Charleston. In fact the British headquarters was said to be located at Jacob Motte's plantation estate in Hibben. It also played a major role in "The War of the States" as the town was said to draw up the first session resolution for South Carolina in 1860. It was also the secret training ground for the nine-man crew of the Confederate submarine CSS H.L. Hunley. It was from Breach Inlet in 1864 that this small vessel was launched to attack and sink the Union warship "Housitanic". Today Patriot's Point on the south side of the city harbors the famed WWII Aircraft Carrier Yorktown which saw extensive battle time in the Pacific. TodayToday Mt Pleasant has grown into a thriving community with over 76,000 residents an incredible jump from the turn of the century when the city hosted 30,000 inhabitants.  Competitive costs of business, a pro-business attitude and attractive financial incentives highlight Mount Pleasant as a prime location for relocating, expanding, emerging and start-up operations. With a plethora of choices this makes this town a perfect place to visit or reside. Mount Pleasant is also home to one of the most filmed plantations in the Charleston area Boone Hall.  The mini series "North and South" use the plantation for many shots and the entrance way into the plantation is one of the most photographed shots of the plantation itself.
